Inis Eonáin House

Inis Eonáin a  bespoke dwelling in the Cork countryside is modelled on a traditional farm house with emphasis placed on vernacular rural architecture. The Cork County Council planner’s report described the proposed design as follows;

“The house fits into the landscape, and is of high design quality, having emerged from a proper site analysis, and solid understanding of scale, proportions and form"

Connecting with the beauty of the landscape while also providing protection from the most extreme elements in this natural valley drove the form and materiality of the building. The living spaces are drawn out along an east west axis with infinite views through gable windows perfectly aligned at each end of the house. A deep recessed southern façade provides shade from the high summer sun and protection from the strong south westerly winds. The concrete columns add thermal mass and a beautiful tactility to the facade. Openings between these columns allow for a sheltered access to the garden. The simple form roots the building comfortably in its rural setting as it responds to a traditional farmhouse typology.
